Even as a student, he performed as assistant conductor for orchestras and ensembles, including the Residentie Orkest and the Asko-Schoenberg Ensemble.  He also conducted the Dutch premières of Ives' Universe Symphony with the Noord Nederlands Orkest and Stockhausen's Hochzeiten aus Sonntag aus Licht, with the Radio Philharmonic.  The première of Ives' Universe Symphony was highly acclaimed, and its popularity led to repeat performances the following year in the prestigious Cité de la Musique in Paris.  In 2008-2009 he was conductor at the Ligeti Academy and of the Asko-Schoenberg Ensemble.

Joost Geevers-van Acht is an advocate of contemporary music at home and abroad, and has worked with many new-music ensembles, including the Ives Ensemble, Slagwerk Den Haag, de Diamant Fabriek, Århus Sinfonietta, Ensemble de Música Contemporanea de Illes Balears and the Hafnia Chamber Orchestra.

He is also founder and musical leader of contemporary musical theatre groups,  Fast Opera Productions and Neo-fanfare 9x13.

In 2015 his first book, "In gesprek met de oude meesters,"  was published.
